Tourism can be classified mainly by the location of the travel. Here are three main types of tourism:
Domestic Tourism:
- This type of tourism means people traveling in their own country for fun, work, or other reasons.
- The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) says domestic tourism is a big part of the tourism industry. It helps the economy by supporting local attractions and services.
- Examples include an American family going on vacation to Yellowstone National Park or a French businessperson going to a conference in Paris.
Inbound Tourism:
- Inbound tourism is when people from other countries visit a country for fun. They may come to see sights, go to events, or do business.
- The National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO) points out that inbound tourism is important for making money and sharing cultures.
- For example, tourists from Japan visit the Grand Canyon in the United States. Canadians may go to Mexico for a beach holiday.

- The OECD Tourism Trends and Policies say that outbound tourism lets people meet new cultures and helps the world’s economy by spreading travel spending around the globe.
- Examples include Australians going to Bali for a vacation or Germans traveling to Italy for a wine tour.
